about

KHAR-SELIM is a tribute album to the award-winning space RTS game from my childhood, homeworld (1999)

"One hundred years ago, a satellite detected an object under the sands of the Great Desert.
An ancient starship, buried in the sand.
Deep inside the ruin was a single stone that would change the course of our history forever. On the stone was etched a galactic map, and a single word more ancient than the clans themselves:
Hiigara;
Our home."

Homeworld is a game about hope and loss, struggle and freedom, and stealing the other guy's laser boat.

---

However, as I was 5 years old when the game came out, I obviously couldn't afford it, let alone the computer you'd need to run those highly advanced graphics. Until I was 11 (by which time, the game source was free to good home), I was a little kid with an overactive imagination stuck playing the demo on the office computer. Each time, the game ending with the eerie sight of the Khar-Selim, untethered and under threat in this abyss, very much alone.

I've loved ambient music ever since, and the original soundtrack is a timeless favourite in my library.

In 2015, gearbox "remastered" the Homeworld games, and memories came flooding back.

I wanted to devote effort to what I believe are the most important tenets of ambient music as I understand it. Negative space, texture, contrast, colour and 3d space. Brian Eno suggests that ambient music should "accommodate many levels of listening attention without enforcing one in particular; it must be as ignorable as it is interesting." Non-ambient, inspired pieces are also present.

Included in the download is an uncropped version of the album cover and a stripped down beta version of Khar-selim II and Guidestone, "angel moon", which eventually became their own tracks. Enjoy this bonus!
